The MANY Uses of Coconut Oil!

I bought some organic virgin coconut oil over the holidays to bake with, and as it turns out, it has a TON of other uses! I’m super excited about my “newfound discovery”& several people asked, so I wanted to share some of the other ways I’ve been using it. I love that it’s all natural too…

I saw a pin on Pinterest that suggested using coconut oil on your hair, so I decided to give it a shot over Christmas break. I applied it thoroughly through my hair (yes, it feels yucky), wrapped it in a thin towel & used the hair dryer to apply heat. I let it sit for about 30- 45 minutes and then washed it out in the shower. I LOVED how my hair looked/felt afterwards!!!

My newest thing is to use it on my skin!! It almost “melts” when you touch it, turning it from a waxy substance into an oil when you apply it to your body. I massage it onto my baby bump (again, it’s all natural so I don’t have to worry about chemicals), under my eyes, and onto any dry spots (knees, elbows). I also use it as a “chapstick” before bed. I’ve read that not only is it an awesome moisturizer, but that it has some natural SPF and can lighten dark spots.

Here are a few other really interesting uses I found from this article that I may just have to try out:

  • great for cooking (stir-fry, non-dairy replacement for butter in baking)
  • as creamer in coffee
  • eye-makeup remover
  • diaper rash cream
  • as cuticle oil (I need that right now because hands are INCREDIBLY dry from washing them so much- trying my best to avoid all these yucky germs!)
  • shaving cream
  • natural baby lotion
  • to increase milk supply
  • whitening toothpaste
  • natural deoderant

Obviously my mind is geared toward mama/baby uses right now, but the health benefits really seem to be unending. This is sorta like Apple Cider Vinegar (another love of mine)- all natural with COUNTLESS uses!

My only suggestion is to make sure you have two different containers of coconut oil…..one for cooking/baking & one for “beauty” uses. I have the first one pictured (I found it at Publix in the health food section), and this one from Costco…

I love love love coconut oil. I've been using it for the past two years, and love it as a lotion after the shower.

Thanks for even more tips!

I use this to wash my face at night! I started using it in place of my face wash and I'll never go back! It takes all my makeup off and my skin feels great.

I have found a new love for coconut oil as well. I use it in the shower for shaving, as a lotion, and I also put it in my son's bath water & use it as a lotion for him too because he is like his mommy and has dry skin already. I tried it as eye makeup remover and it didn't work great but did work. I'm hoping to try a different kind later to see what happens. And I can't wait to try it on my hair when I have that extra time to do it.

Its good to keep some in the house to use on your baby once he's here. My daughter had a small patch of cradle cap and I'd rub in the coconut oil and then comb away the flakes. Sounds kinda gross but it was better than her having a flakey looking head! LOL Also its good for baby acne

I love the oils instead of body lotions! I used almond oil all throughout my pregnancy to make sure those stretch marks don't make their way in. Coconut and jojoba oil are both great also

I've wanted to try coconut oil but haven't gotten around to it. This was a great post! Question though, is your hair thick, fine, etc? Wondering if it would be too heavy for fine hair???

Absolutely awesome! I have a lot of allergies and sensitivities to cosmetic items with perfume so the all natural beauty items are what I'm looking for! Thanks, Danielle!

Perfect timing for this post - I keep meaning to google coconut oil used. I saw a running blogger who put it in her hair before a run so I tried that. I've also been reading about the benefits of taking a tablespoon of it each day.

Thanks for the inspiration to finally try this. I had been meaning to for awhile and your posting motivated me to go buy some and put it to use! I used it in my hair. I was worried it would weigh it down and not wash out well, but it just left it feeling, light and silky! Loved it! How often do you use it in your hair? I haven't heard any recommendations for that and was wondering how often to not cause build up?
