Health tips for the week!

After reading Sam's post last week with health and fitness links, I decided to share the article on 22 foods with trans fat with some friends at work. I realized after reading that article that I definitely need to cut some junk out of my diet, so I thought others might benefit from the reminder as well.  One friend wrote me back and asked how I really don't eat all of those foods....and I had to admit to her, I do eat them.  I think moderation is okay, but I need to do a little revamping on my diet.  Yes, even my beloved ice cream has trans fat.
One thing I do to be healthier is spend about an hour every Sunday preparing healthy meals for the next week. I boil or grill some chicken, make tuna salad (with spicy mustard and chopped pickles & boiled egg whites), cut veggies, pre-make salads, and boil 5 dozen eggs. Yes....5 dozen (I eat at least 5 egg whites every day- they are SO good for you!!)

I do this to make sure I have lots of healthy options for lunches and snacks throughout the week. It's a whole lot easier to make the right choice when you have good foods around. (This week I also included oranges, bananas, greek yogurt, and raw almonds on my grocery list.)  All of these colors make me very happy!!
Now I just need to take C Mae's advice and invest in some BPA free or glass containers!

Also, after reading a few blog posts about sugar this week  (like this one), I  decided it's about time to cut back. Bummer. I'm totally a sweets girl and it is REALLY hard for me to do the whole no sugar thing.  But I can....and will. I know moderation is okay for some people, but my brain doesn't work like that. If I eat ANY sugar, it only leaves me wanting more...lots more.

Considering the fact that I ate about 37 of these guys today (yikes!), I guess I WILL start tomorrow on the whole "sugar is evil and don't even put it in your mouth" deal. (No, I didn't really count. Just estimating. And yes, they are addicting!!)
Finally, I pan to mix it up with my workout this week. Yoga, running, weight lifting, and plyos.  Muscle confusion does a body good!!  If you need some great at-home workout ideas, check out Pinterest! Lots of ideas like this one...
It works! here is a video so you can see the form for each move http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AimPOSXe7n4&feature;=player_embedded
Have a great week.

This time of year is always hard to clean up your diet! Good luck. I'm trying to pay close attention this year because my sister gets married in January and I'm wearing a pencil-skirted bridesmaid dress - now that's motivational :)

Ok- I am with you on the food preparation on the weekends! I do a gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free diet- and basically no sugar. But the egg thing! Ahhh- so I was eating 6-12 egg whites a day. usually 6 sometimes 12- but if totally... TMI- gave me so much gas and bloating!!!!! I have now cut them out. Total bummer! Do you have any issues with the amount of eggs you consume?

We are so twins! I have at least 5 egg whites a day too! I have 5 egg whites for beast every.single.day! Your tuna recipe with the egg whites sound awesome, will be trying that this week. I read that trans fat article and I could cry about my creamer - its what gets me through the hectic morning!

Love the blog! Can you do a post sometime on how you structure your lifting program?

I feel like I used to have gas when I consumed a lot of protein, but I think your body gets used to it over time. I have been eating 3+ egg whites plus lots of lean protein for about 3 years now, so the gas issue has finally subsided. Hang in there, & roll the windows down. Haha! :)

And yes, I will. Right now I'm not doing a rigorous lifting program because I'm training for a marathon, but I will get back on it when this race is over.

Resistance training burns 500% more calories than cardio alone because it bumps your metabolism up and burns fat for the next 2-3 days. I will do a post soon for sure, but you may want to check out Jamie Eason's LiveFit Trainer for a great workout program. )
