Thursday's Devotion: What Does Sin REALLY Do?

We have to keep reminding ourself that Satan is a LIAR.  The things God calls sin, Satan tells us are fun, innocent, safe, no big deal, desirable, meeting our needs, & unavoidable. The truth is:

1. Sin is dangerous, deadly, and destructive.
2. We WILL reap what we sow.
3. Every choice we make today WILL have consequences.
4. If we play with fire, we WILL get burned.
5. Sin, when full-grown, will give birth to death. (James 1:15)

People have a tough time connecting their fleshly sins and choices with the consequenes in their lives, marriages, relationships, and health. If you're at a point when you aren't hearing from God, or ar struggling, perhaps it's because of the sin in your life. God cannot be where sin is, and sin separates us from Him. In fact, it does a lot more than that:
  • Sin steals joy. (Psalm 51:12)
  • Sin removes confidence. (1 John 3:19-21)
  • Sin brings guilt. (Psalm 51:3)
  • Sin gives Satan the upper hand. (2 Corinthians 2:9-11)
  • Sin hurts God's spirit. (1 Thess 5:19)
  • Sin bring sphysical damage. (Psalms 38:1-11, 31:10)
  • Sin causes an ache to the soul. (Psalm 32:3-4)
  • Sin breaks God's heart. (Ephesians 4:30)
  • Sin opens the door to other sins. (Isaiah 30:1)
  • Sin breaks fellowship with God. (Isaiah 59:1-2)
  • Sin produces fear. (Proverbs 28:1)
  • Sin makes me its slave. (John 18:34, Romans 6:16)
This post is applicable to all of our lives because "We are all sinners and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23).  I think it is important to recognize sin for what it really is, and stop believing the lies that it really isn't that bad, only affects us, and God will forgive us anyway.
